New Godzilla Film From Toho With Takashi Yamazaki Helming Project Again

Toho announced a new Godzilla film has been greenlit, following the success of Godzilla: Minus One last year and its extended theatrical re-release. During the run of Minus One, Takashi Yamazaki expressed interest in returning to the Godzilla franchise, and this new film confirms his involvement. Yamazaki, who served as writer, director and VFX artist for Minus One, has yet to disclose his role in the upcoming film.

Toho made the announcement on X, formerly Twitter, with a short PowerPoint-style video accompanied by Akira Ifukube’s iconic music from the franchise. The textual announcement appeared across the screen, but no additional information was revealed.

It is widely speculated that the new Godzilla film will serve as a sequel to Minus One, though sequels have been rare in the current era of the franchise. Yamazaki has not shared any details about the production, and beyond his name being attached, his role in the project remains uncertain, leaving fans in a state of speculation.

Godzilla is the world’s longest-running film franchise, and its popularity has surged with recent revivals. First appearing in 1954’s Gojira, the “King of the Monsters” now spans a vast and varied library of films. Recently, the Legendary Monsterverse, which follows Godzilla and the American movie monster Kong, concluded with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. With this new film, Toho reclaims the reins of the franchise, bringing Godzilla back to center stage.
