Hikari is set to direct Rental Family, starring Brendan Fraser and Mari Yamamoto; Searchlight Pictures will be releasing the film. Rental Family follows an actor who is out of a job and living in Tokyo. He is then hired by a Japanese rental family company to serve as a token American guy, leading to an unexpected journey as he plays this stand-in role for others. Principal photography is set to commence in Japan next week.
Yamamoto is most well-known for her work on the recent Apple TV+ series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters as well as her work on another Apple production, Pachinko.
Fraser is most well-known for his films of the late 90s and early 2000s, such as The Mummy series, George of the Jungle, and Gods and Monsters. Recently he won an Oscar for his role in The Whale and was last seen in Killers of the Flower Moon.
Hikari wrote the screenplay for Rental Family with a collaborator on her feature film 37 Seconds, Stephen Blahut. She is known for the aforementioned film as well as for directing episodes for the Emmy-winning and Golden Globe-winning Netflix series Beef.
Searchlight is set to announce the film’s release plans at a later date.
