Marvel Studios let journalists get a sneak peek of some of their more secretive projects on Monday, according to Hollywood Reporter. One of the highlights of this event was when co-president of Marvel Studios, Louis D’Esposito revealed some dailies from Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, which has wrapped up its shooting this week.
The footage had yet to receive the full Hollywood treatment, lacking the visual effects or color correcting that will occur before the film hits the big screens; but, although the footage was rough, it was easy to tell that the film will be filled with the grandeur audiences are hoping to see.
The journalists were shown the coronation scene, in which T’Challa (Black Panther), played by Chadwick Boseman takes on the role of monarch left behind after his father dies in a previous Marvel film, Captain America: Civil War. The costumes were reportedly gorgeous, as were the ceremonial weapons that a bare chested T’Challa holds during the ceremony, leaving much splendor to look forward to.
Other scenes shown during the event featured Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong’o taking out some threatening looking bad guys, and an exchange between Ulysses Klaue, once again played by Andy Serkis, and Everett K. Ross, played by Martin Freeman, as Klaue rolls up to a casino with a huge entourage. Soon after, T’Challa drops in to create chaos and take out all the bad guys.
A fun little detail for Marvel fanatics, Andy Serkis had something strange on one of his arms. Since Klaue lost his arm in Avengers: Age of Ultron, it looks like some CGI is going to be at play to give him some sort of mechanical arm replacement.
Black Panther will hit theaters on February 16, 2018.
