David Lynch left behind an extensive film career that traveled to the surrealist, uncanny subconscious of the mind. He created a short film for the 2018 Lisboa Film Festival (LEFFEST) that has recently been made public following his devastating passing.
Lynch conceived an 87-second short black and white film that features an anthropomorphic baby doll named Betty. Betty is shown to have cut off her own arm offscreen and is waiting for an ambulance to arrive, as the audio track plays sirens in the background. Betty is also presumably awaiting Mr. Lynch’s return, who has destroyed the room where Betty is located. The setting in the short depicts a room with broken glass everywhere, making the surroundings all the more ominous.
As Mr. Lynch’s 79th birthday would have been on January 20, his family posted from his account on X, formerly known as Twitter, for a worldwide meditation ten-minute session at noon. Lynch was a passionate practitioner of Transcendental Meditation, and he believed it allowed him to open up his own subconscious to create story ideas for film and art. Lynch, who was renowned for his cult hit series Twin Peaks, will be missed and has left behind a sizeable multimedia collage of work.
