It usually takes awhile for awards winners to make waves in newer films, but Ben Ripley, on his directorial debut, has netted some heavy hitters. Oscar nominees Stephanie Hsu (‘Everything, Everywhere, All at Once’) and Guy Pearce (‘The Brutalist’), alongside Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham (‘Ted Lasso’), are attached to star in the upcoming crime thriller ‘The Teller’, a new feature preparing for the Cannes market. As mentioned previously, Ben Ripley is set to first time direct. He previously wrote the sci-fi thriller ‘Source Code’ and returns to do the same for this screenplay.
The film is set in San Francisco, with the story centering on a bank teller who gets pulled into a criminal plot after after a robbery collapses into chaos. The producers describe the project to be in the same vein as the films ‘The Usual Suspects’ and ‘The Town’, with themes that combine mystery, action, and psychological suspense. Stephanie Hsu is assumed to play the lead role, while Guy Pearce and Hannah Waddingham portray influential figures tied to the conspiracy.
Storyland Pictures and MadRiver Pictures are set to produce, with international sales beginning during the Cannes Film Market According to the producers. The thriller will allegedly focus heavily on more small-scale character dynamics and emotional tension rather than large-scale action sequences.
Production on ‘The Teller’ is expected to start later this year around Fall, and additional casting is currently underway.
