007 is going through some growing pains when it comes to new ownership. All of the classic James Bond films have been giving content warnings on the franchises’ new home, Prime Video.
It wouldn’t be exaggerating to say that James Bond has become one of the most iconic characters in the extensive history of film. Since he first hit the scene in 1962’s Dr. No, Bond has stayed relevant in the cultural zeitgeist, taking on one dastardly villain after another, and even undergoing multiple recastings.
However, the nature of James Bond’s character has proven to be somewhat problematic as of late. After acquiring the franchise, Amazon MGM put the films onto their streaming service, adding some content warnings. Collider notes that a good portion of the warnings range from alcohol use to foul language, the type that are commonplace in an action movie. But there’s even been a warning placed for “womanising” on some of the installments.
Collider also noted that a vast amount of Bond fans have reacted quite negatively against this. One of the most notable examples is Sir John Hayes, a member of the UK Parliament as well as a big Bond fan.
He stated that many already know what kind of characteristics are part and parcel with Bond, while expressing that “it feels like they want to turn Bond into a Disney character,” when it comes to the warnings.
