The British Academy of Film and Television Awards more commonly known as BAFTA has revealed the new 2025 category for outstanding family films and a new point system that will be used to determine the outstanding British Film for the next BAFTA ceremony. This point system is designed to determine the eligibility of films for the nominations. This will lead to 15 longlisted films being ranked with the top five moving on to nominations and another five being selected by academy-provided jurors.
For the new Family Film category introduction the BAFTA shared that it was created to “celebrate the very best films appealing to inter-generational audiences”. This category aims to recognize contributions of children’s media and give this wider range of films a chance to show their creative and artistic achievements by the singular category recognition.
Some things have stayed the same with performance categories still being decided between a mix of voting and jurors from the academy with the change being for the acting awards the acting chapter is to decide the nominations.
Other changes included dropping the screening mandate from 10 screenings per day for seven days meaning 70 total screenings to be eligible to 50 screenings for seven days making a total of 350 screenings for films to be eligible for the awards.
