During an interview with The Late Brake Show at the 2023 Porsche Rennsport Reunion Event, Jay Ward admitted to another Cars project being in development by Pixar. While the project is being developed, audiences won’t likely see this new development in the Cars franchise for a few years. This development seems to fit with Disney’s other business decisions as they have been leaning on some of their most popular franchises.
On the new project, Ward stated, “There are more Cars things brewing, I can’t say much more yet…Cars has got a life that will keep going. I am working on some real fun projects right now that you will see in a couple of years. It takes us a while to make them.”
Pixar never knew how popular Cars was going to become over the years. In the interview, Ward explained how the franchise grew in popularity and attributes its popularity to the use of home video during that time: “It became so much bigger than we expected…everyday, a new child sees it for the first time, which we did not expect. The interesting thing was that Cars came out in 2006 and this is when DVDs were quite popular. It was popular theatrically when it came out, but it grew more popular. Throughout the end of the year and into the next year, more and more people saw it.”
