The “four reasons,” the Book Club trailer lovingly refers to for being motivated, “to go to the movies,” are (in no particular order) Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen.
Those are some pretty big reasons to enjoy Book Club, which follows these four women as they mine even more than the last two movie sequels could out of the 50 Shades of Grey book series.
Each women comes with her own unique circumstance: Diane, a recently widowed woman after 40 years of marriage (Diane Keaton), Vivian, who wishes to remain unfettered as she dates (Jane Fonda), Sharon, who is still working through a ten-plus-year divorce (Candice Bergen), and Carol, who is slogging through a 35-year marriage (Mary Steenburgen). As the group plunges deeper into the first book of the 50 Shades of Grey series, so progresses their transformation.
The sharp, witty script is written by Bill Holderman and Erin Simms and the film is directed by Holderman.
Book Club will be in theaters on May 18.
