After being pushed back numerous times, Avatar 2 is still on track for its current release date set at December 17, 2021. With the previous film debuting way back in 2009, fans are interested to see what has been taking so long in the plus ten year hiatus between the first film and its sequel.
On the film’s official twitter account, the following image was shared with a small description of the scenes being filmed.
The image shows an elaborate boat set built on a sound stage, as would be expected for a film so heavily CGI based. It is described as a massive ship, which will later be filled in with those special effects. With the plot being so heavily concealed so far, this is a good first glimpse into what mysteries the sequel may hold.
The ocean of Pandora was not explored in 2009’s Avatar, which focused more on the skies than the waters. This behind the scenes image may suggest that the next film will be taking us to explore these depths, with a plethora of new creatures and dilemmas as they venture into new territory.
This tweet also shares that this is the crew’s last live action film day of 2019, showing that progress is steadily being made, but there is still much more work to come in the next 2 years before release. In the tweet’s thread, the official twitter account mentioned that no trailer will be coming anytime soon, but that a mobile game will be arriving in 2020.
