New ‘Avatar: Fire And Ash’ Stills Show New Characters Ahead Of Big Screen Debut

Fans of James Cameron’s successful Avatar series are just days away from witnessing the newest installment, Fire And Ash. With the film set to make quite a splash at the box office, several new stills have been released in anticipation.

Picking up in the wake of The Way Of Water, Fire And Ash finds the Sully family struggling to keep themselves together while also facing a threat like never before; a dangerous tribe of Na’vi, intent on burning down the beauty of Pandora. With the fate of the planet at stake, Jake has to rally his allies, as well as his family, to save Pandora once and for all.

Screenrant had the exclusive privilege of debuting both stills recently, each showcasing several of the main characters. The first one depicts series protagonists Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) talking with a newly introduced character. Eagle-eyed fans who saw the rerelease of The Way Of Water will recognize him as Peylak, played by David Thewlis. One of the three possible scenes included in the post credits was one of Jake and Neytiri discussing an agreement with Peylak, with them relying on him and his nomadic Wind Trader tribe to transport one of their own.

The idea of beneficial alliances is a running trend between the two stills, as the other shows the two main villains of the film interacting. Series antagonist Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) is seen from behind, talking to another new character; the fearsome Varang, played by Oona Chaplin. The trailers for the film show something of a mutual agreement between the two and their parties they command; Quaritch gets a force to go after Jake, and Varang can tear down Pandora.

In another piece of theirs, Screenrant took the mystical setting of Avatar and presented the case for why movies could use the 3D format the series is known for. Although a big deal in the early 2010, mentioning films beyond Avatar such as Life Of Pi and Hugo, it fell into just being a gimmick after a few years. However, with the climate of post-COVID moviegoing, and how much in debate it is, 3D making a comeback, especially with Cameron’s gravitas, could be a fruitful endeavor for big screens, akin to films like One Battle After Another making a massive splash in 70mm IMAX.

Avatar: Fire And Ash hits theaters this Friday.
