New ‘Attack On Titan’ Trailer Features Titans Attacking

And humans launching attacks on the Titans – see how the title works now?

The film’s premise is basically the same as the Japanese comic it’s based on:

100 years ago, titans suddenly appeared on Earth. Soon, human civilization veered on collapse due to the titans. Humans then built a giant wall to defend themselves. Within the giant walls, humans lived in peace, but, 100 years later, the giant wall is broken.

Fans of the source material will recognize several specific Titans feature in the new trailer, including the gargantuan, skinless Colossal Titan, and the exceptionally creepy Smiling Titan who really jump starts the story by…well, we won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read the comic or watched the 2013 animated adaptation.

The Attack on Titan manga (comic) and anime (cartoon) were both massive (and unprecedented) hits in Japan and America (with numerous comparisons drawn between it and another cross-media success, The Walking Dead). With a built-in fanbase, the live-action adaptation seems like a sure-fire success (financially at least); and given the long delay of the anime’s second season (it won’t be out until 2016) fans might be desperate enough to watch anything under the Titan brand. Although, given past experience with manga-based films (see: Rurouni Kenshin), it probably won’t receive a very wide release stateside.
