The Mosquito Bowl, a war film directed by Peter Berg, will have its premiere at the 40th AFI Fest this fall. The film is based on the book written by Buzz Bissinger, and stars Nicholas Galitzine (Masters of the Universe), Ray Nicholson (Smile 2, Novocaine), Tom Francis, and Bill Skarsgård. The film will be unveiled on October 22 at a gala premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.

The film tells the true story of four college football stars who wind up in the Marines fighting in the invasion of Okinawa. The college students joined up with the Marines following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, unaware of how brutal their military experience was about to be. Peter Berg penned the adapted screenplay himself alongside Mark L. Smith, and he also produced the film with Brian Grazer and Alex Gayner. Peter Berg, who has directed films such as Deepwater Horizon and Lone Survivor, is cousins with Buzz Bissinger. They previously worked together on the film and TV versions of Friday Night Lights. When asked about the film, Berg stated,

I’ve spent much of my career telling stories about people who put themselves in harm’s way, and The Mosquito Bowl is one of the most personal explorations of that for me. These young men were athletes and friends who became soldiers and were asked to carry an unimaginable burden. I’m very proud of this film and honored that the film will premiere at this year’s AFI Fest.

Following its festival premiere, Netflix is releasing the film in theaters starting on October 30, with the film landing on the streamer about a month later on November 25. A significant awards push is expected for the film as well.
