Netflix to Release New Japanese Rom-Com ‘In Love and Deep Water’

Netflix is currently having a major rough patch. With their constant cancellations of beloved shows, targeting of what they call “Freeloaders,” and low-brow nothing interesting content are only some of the issues currently facing the streaming giant. Their current game plan is to go abroad and dominate a global market to back up falling U.S streaming numbers, and Japan is at the top of their list. To this end, the company has made a Herculean effort of trying to pitch to whatever audience they can get in Japan, and their newest effort is a rom-com based on the high seas that will hopefully take Japan by storm.

The film is called In Love and Deep Water, and the film follows a murder-mystery on a luxury yacht headed for the Aegean Sea.  The film stars Ryo Yoshizawa (Sakura, Kingdom) as Suguru, the loyal butler for the proprietor of the yacht; and Aoi Miyazaki (Future Family, Birthday Card) as Chizuru, the mysterious woman and love interest for Suguru.

The film is written by beloved veteran screenwriter Yuji Sakamoto (Tokyo Love Story, Kadin). Sakamoto calls the project  “a romantic comedy delivered on an unprecedented scale.” He also said that “I always wanted to make a film like that, but I never thought I would be able to,” Sakamoto said in a statement. “With this film, the dream I had given up on has come true. I believe viewers will be able to spend a dream-like time with lovely music, beautiful costumes, and charming people brought to life by the ultimate cast, beginning with Ryo Yoshizawa and Aoi Miyazaki. I hope you will enjoy this rich and romantic ocean cruise.”
