After closing this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the small and charming indie The Fundamentals of Caring was picked up by Netflix to be released on the streaming service starting June 24. Adapted and directed by Letterman executive producer Rob Burnett, the film stars both indie and studio vet Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) along with rising star Craig Roberts (Submarine) and singer Selena Gomez (Spring Breakers). Also in the cast is Jennifer Ehle (Zero Dark Thirty) and Megan Ferguson (Love and Other Drugs).
Rudd plays Ben, a man struggling from personal tragedy who decides to become a personal caregiver and is placed with eighteen-year-old Trevor, a smart-mouthed young man with muscular dystrophy. The two embark on a road trip across the U.S. where they both face their personal roadblocks and embrace life from a new perspective.
The trailer features Rudd falling effortlessly back into the indie mold, with his surefire balance of heart and humor at every turn. Roberts, already a growing presence within the indie world, – he directed his first feature last year, Just Jim starring himself and Emile Hirsch, which premiered at 2015’s SXSW – looks to be refreshingly youthful presence alongside Gomez who continues to build up her indie film cred. Her last project was 2014’s Rudderless and her next movie will be James Franco’s In Dubious Battle.
