The third installment of the Knives Out Mystery series starring Daniel Craig as the Southern-Fried-accented detective Benoit Blanc has had its first teaser with new footage released by Netflix. Titled Wake Up Dead Man, after a song by U2, continuing the series trend of naming entries after the titles of rock songs (after Knives Out for Radiohead and Glass Onion for The Beatles).
Like the prior two movies, Wake Up Dead Man bolsters Craig with an all-star cast of familiar stars and rising actors. Joining the ranks this outing are Jeremy Renner, Glenn Close, Thomas Haden Church, Mila Kunis, Josh O’Connor, Cailee Spaeny, Josh Brolin, Andrew Scott and Kerry Washington. From the brief footage highlighted in the trailer comes hints of how writer and director Rian Johnson is set to play with the mystery genre in his familiar style of lovable homage and sleight of hand plotting, with Blanc touting the unrevealed case as “the Holy Grail” in its challenge to the crime solving detective.
Where Knives Out rested in autumnal foliage and Glass Onion in sun-soaked Greece, the trailer for Wake Up Dead Man teases a moodier atmosphere of warm browns and wet greens, punctured by shots of deep blood-red light spilling into a cavernous chapel. Also depicted in the trailer is Johnson’s directing style embracing more extreme angles with close-ups of Craig as deep gold sunlight washes over his face and Josh Brolin in priest garb filmed underneath at an extremely low, titled angle as statues of angels tower over him. Most unnerving is the penultimate shot of new footage shown, capturing Josh O’Connor stabbing towards the camera with a murderous look. But knowing the previous films, it is likely that things are not as simple as they appear.
Wake Up Dead Man is set to release on December 12, 2025 on Netflix. Check out the announcement trailer below.
