Netflix Releases First Trailer for ‘Snowpiercer’ Director’s Next Film, ‘Okja’

In the tradition of child-meets-creature buddy stories popularized by films like E.T. The Extra Terrestrial, How to Train Your Dragon, The Iron Giant and Lilo and Stitch, now comes Okja.

Netflix has just debuted the first official trailer for their next original film, Okja, which will premiere at the 70th annual Cannes Film Festival this month.

From director Bong Joon Ho (Snowpiercer, The Host), the film stars An Seo Hyun as Mija, young Korean girl who is the sole caretaker and friend to a massive dog/hippo/pig hybrid-like creature named Okja. When a global conglomerate, run by CEO Lucy Miranda (played by Doctor Strange‘s Tilda Swinton), threatens to take Okja to New York City for their own gain, Mija must embark on a dangerous journey to save her lovable friend before it is turned into “super-pig” bacon, while also battling groups of eager opportunists for the control of Okja’s destiny.

Okja also stars Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine), An Seo Hyun, Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Lily Collins (The Blind Side), Yoon Je Moon, Shirley Henderson (Trainspotting), Woo Shik Choi, Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul), and Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler).

The film will premiere exclusively on the Netflix streaming service on June 28th.

Austin Allison: Born and raised in Tucson, AZ, I have been obsessed with cartoons, animation, and film in general for as long as I've known how to talk and draw. From Disney animation to indie movies, filmmaking was always the purest form of art to me. I majored in Film and Television Studies and minored in Studio Art at the University of Arizona. The greatest aspect of studying film was developing a creative and critical eye for a medium that I had loved for so long, but couldn't explain why I loved it until now.
