Following her recent success with Barbie, Little Women, and Lady Bird, acclaimed director Greta Gerwig has plans to adapt C.S. Lewis’ seven-novel saga The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix. According to MovieWeb, Netflix hopes to adapt the epic fantasy series into eight films for a joint IMAX release. Since the original book series consists of seven volumes, there is speculation about the plans for creating eight films, which could consist of splitting one book into two films or creating a new story altogether.
The Chronicles of Narnia books were previously adapted by Disney into three films: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe; Prince Caspian; and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. IMAX CEO Rich Gerlfond recently expressed joy when discussing the joint project between IMAX and Netflix, stating:
I’ve talked to Netflix about this, and I think in general they are as excited as we are to do it. But we are not in a rush to do another one tomorrow. I think the factors have to come into place that work for everyone.
Netflix has achieved award-winning success in the past with joint theatrical releases, including the films The Irishman, Roma, Marriage Story, and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
Greta Gerwig’s first film in the new The Chronicles of Narnia franchise is scheduled for a theatrical release date of November 26, 2026, with plans to stream on Netflix a few weeks afterward.
