Netflix Lands ‘Nimona’ Animated Movie

After years of productions troubles, the adaptation of the graphic novel Nimona is finally coming to Netflix. The film was previously set up at the Fox-owned Blue Sky Studios but has since been shuttered by Disney. The animated feature of ND Stevenson’s bestselling novel will hit the streaming service in 2023. Netflix is partnering with Annapurna for the movie with directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane (Spies in Disguise) which stars Chloe Grace Mortex and Riz Ahmed.

The story follows a knight as he is framed for a crime he didn’t commit. Nimona, a shape-shifting teenager, is the only person who can help prove his innocence, and she might just be the monster he swore to kill. Set in the techno-medieval world, the film is unlike anything the animation world has seen before. Mortez is set to be the voice behind Nimona with Ahmed as Boldheart and Eugene Lee Yang as Ambrosius Goldenloin. DNEG Animation is behind the animation.

The project has faced many hardships while trying to get produced, including production shutdowns and the cancellation of releasing the film altogether in 2022. More issues came from a same-gender kiss featured in the film after it was acquired by Disney. The graphic novel has gone on to win an Eisner Award after its publication as a webcomic in 2015.
