Netflix Hits A Low Point, Matches Streaming Numbers From 2017

Do the days where you would open Netflix to find ten new Netflix Originals films seem far and few in between? If so, you are not the only one to notice.

While Netflix has done an impressive job at staying arguably the most relevant platform in the streaming world, new data has shown that the output of their movie projects has hit a low that hasn’t been reached since 2017.

To put into a more detailed perspective, we have taken look at the number of films released by Netflix in last few years. Netflix peaked in Q1 of 2022, releasing 50 Netflix Original films. In the years to follow, up until present day, we have seen a steady decline in the number of Netflix Original Films released. In Q1 of 2023, 39 Originals were released, dropping to 34 by Q1 of 2025. With a new low in the span of 8 years, Q1 of 2026 has only 23 Original films released, just 10 more films released than in 2017. Geographically analyzing the decrease in Netflix Originals also has given some interesting insight. The decrease is most dense in Netflix’s Western markets.

While this seems relatively uncommon for the conglomerate that is Netflix, it could be a product of things out of their control. Netflix has gone through leadership change, a strike, and a pandemic. Not to mention, their sudden pricing changes could also affect the audiences they are able to reach. With increased licensing, Netflix may have more on the horizon looking towards 2027.
