A surprise cell phone outage swept the United States this Thursday morning. More than 70,000 people woke up to a lack of cell phone service. While AT&T’s network was hit the hardest, a few T-Mobile and Verizon users also reported issues. It’s currently unknown what caused the outage, but currently, there is no evidence of it being a result of an intentional attack. While this outage has had some real consequences, such as halting emergency services, many social media users have been quick to bring up Netflix’s 2023 disaster film Leave the World Behind. The Hollywood Reporter collected many of the reactions below:
Well played #Netflix .. if you wanted us to watch #leavetheworldbehind then all you had to do was say that… This whole taking down #att network is a bit much.. but the marketing strategy is working. #sosonly #attoutage pic.twitter.com/HOrn6Oo5qq

Based on the novel of the same name by Rumaan Alam, Leave the World Behind, starring Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, and Myha’la, begins with a similar incident, with all of the world’s communication systems going down due to a cyber attack. The disasters keep on coming afterwards. Many fans of the film have joked about the situation, pointing out how former president Barack Obama has a rare producing credit for Leave the World Behind.

Some users commented on how right wing groups would use this as the basis for conspiracy theories about the cause of the outage and the former President of the United States.
It does not take 5 minutes to see that a major solar flare could be affecting satellite networks. Meanwhile, the MAGA portion of Twitter is referring to Leave the World Behind as gospel and thinking that Russia/China are testing for an attack. #outage

T-Mobile, US Cellular, Verizon, AT&T and Leave the World Behind all trending this morning.
I can only imagine all of the unhinged conspiracy theories that will be entertained as a result of this…all coming from the MAGA camp of course. ♀️ pic.twitter.com/lNcQk63toM

Even a Donald Trump parody jumped on the trend! The post claimed that the former president personally climbed a cellphone tower to fix the outage.
Donald Trump spotted saving America once again, seen climbing various US Cellular, Nationwide, and other companies phone towers after a mass #outage was reported to Downdetector. Donald Trump will not leave the world behind like Joe Biden and Obama. pic.twitter.com/iZ9bhx0qFb
