The anticipated doc will follow the superstar’s headline performance at the 2018 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
The original post did not feature any video footage or even an picture of Queen Bee. Instead, the streaming service simply posted an image of the word “Homecoming.” While the post is cryptic, it gave fans just enough information to justify excitement for its release. The tweet displayed a digital poster of the word “Homecoming” inscribed in a Greek font on top of a bright yellow background – similar to one of the outfits Beyonce wore during the historic show. The post also revealed an April 17 release date for the documentary.
The aesthetic qualities of the poster match very closely with the singer’s outfit during her performance of “Drunk In Love” at Coachella last year. During the performance, Beyonce took significant time to highlight important black college and universities. Homecoming may serve as a double entendre for Beyonce’s active support of African American education and universities as well as a metaphor for the singer’s return as one of the world’s greatest live performers. These suspicions were confirmed after the release of the Homecoming teaser trailer. The trailer sets the stage with a voiceover of Maya Angelou contextualizing the politically potent and visually grand performance before coagulate symbols crash behind scenes of Beychella in action. The trailer presents the film as a beautiful expression of black identity produced for mass consumption. The Beyonce directed film looks to push the boundaries of popular culture by intertwining powerful sociopolitical themes with pop music all within the context of modern mass media.
