After outbidding several competitors, Netflix has signed $55 million deal at Berlin’s European Film Market for Scott Cooper’s new gothic horror-thriller, The Pale Blue Eye, starring Christian Bale. Bale previously worked with Cooper on the 2017 western drama, Hostiles.
The film follows Bale playing a veteran detective who investigates a series of murders that took place at the U.S. Military Academy West Point in 1830. The detective is helped by a young cadet who would later grow up to become world-famous author, Edgar Allen Poe. The film was adapted by Cooper from Louis Bayard’s novel of the same name.
After Bale finishes work later this fall on Taika Waititi’s upcoming Marvel feature, Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as on David O Russell’s untitled feature, The Pale Blue Eye is set to begin principal photography. It’s unlikely we’ll see any trailers for the film in 2021, but considering the ensemble of Hostiles, more casting news is likely to come.
Netflix has already signed two other 8-figure deals on two other features from this year’s virtual European Film Market, including one for a Colin Firth World War II film, Operation Mincemeat from See-Saw and Cohen Media Group, as well as one for the upcoming Liam Neeson & Laurence Fishburne action-thriller The Ice Road.
