Just a few days after its release, The Kissing Booth 2 is currently No. 1 on Netflix’s viewing charts. But fans of the wildly popular The Kissing Booth franchise will be happy to know, as first reported by Deadline, that not only is a third installment debuting in 2021, but it has already been filmed.
In an announcement Sunday Netflix revealed that it was on board for a third installment of The Kissing Booth. With filming completed, the third film is currently in post-production.
Adapted from Beth Reekles’ self-published novels, the Vince Marcello-directed films follow the romantic journeys of Elle (Joey King), her handsome boyfriend Noah (Jacob Elordi) and her best friend Lee (Joel Courtney). The cast set to return for the new installment also includes Taylor Zakhar Perez, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Meganne Young and Molly Ringwald.
During a live YouTube fan event hosted by the cast on Sunday, King, the star and exec producer, shared the exciting news. While shooting The Kissing Booth 2 in South Africa, the third installment was also secretly shot at the same time.
“It was the hardest secret to keep ever,” King said, adding that filming was a little tricky because “in one day we’d be filming both.”
The third installment will continue where the second one left off, set in the summer before Elle goes off to college with a big decision to make. She has been accepted into both Harvard and Berkeley and now must choose between her boyfriend and her best friend.
The second and third films were produced under Marcello’s Picture Loom banner. The original rom-com installment was the most rewatched Netflix film in 2018.
Marcello wrote the script with Jay Arnold and produced with Michele Weisler, Ed Glauser and Andrew Cole-Bulgin. King and Adam Freidlander are the executive producers.
