Netflix has officially reinstated Steps. In this new animated fairy tale film, Cinderella’s villainized stepsisters are the center of the narrative. Although the project was initially announced in 2021, the film stalled; now Netflix is moving forward again after the very successful KPop Demon Hunters, which has been nominated for a Golden Globe and became Netflix’s most-watched film ever.
Netflix announced the cast, creative team, and a first-look image. The film will be promoted as a new spin on an iconic story. Voicing the stepsisters, Lilith and Margot, will be comedian actress Ali Wong and Academy Award–nominated Stephanie Hsu. Netflix promises to challenge audience expectations. According to the official logline: “Think you know Cinderella’s ‘evil’ stepsisters? Think again!” The plot follows Lilith, who is “blamed for hijacking the Royal Ball with a stolen magic wand,” as she accidentally transforms her sister into a frog and must join forces with Cinderella and “a surprisingly dreamy troll” to uncurse her sister and restore order — and most of all, to prove that even so-called villains deserve “a shot at happily-ever-after.”
The film will be co-directed by John Ripa, known for Raya and the Last Dragon, and debut feature director Alyce Tzue, with Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing producing.
Netflix has recently pushed for more animation after strong audience reactions and critical acclaim for titles like KPop Demon Hunters and In Your Dreams. With Steps, Netflix adds even more star power to its growing animation slate. Hsu’s Oscar-nominated breakout in Everything Everywhere All at Once and Wong’s acclaimed lead role in Beef have firmly established both performers as major on-screen talents. With a well-known fairy-tale foundation and a comedic edge, Steps hopes to modernize narratives with the classic fairytale when it arrives next year.
