Neon, which purchased the winner of this year’s Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, has set a theatrical release for their film. It Was Just An Accident, directed by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, will hit theaters on October 15, 2025. This is the sixth consecutive year a Neon film has received the prestigious award, with the list of winners being It Was Just An Accident, AnoraAnatomy of a FallTitaneTriangle of Sadness, and Parasite. Of those films, two ended up winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards, those being Anora this year and Parasite in 2020.

It Was Just An Accident follows the progression of a simple traffic accident into a series of increasingly complex disagreements and problems. Neon is planning to campaign the film for multiple categories at the Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, and International Film. However, due to director Jafar Panahi’s outspoken criticisms toward the Iranian government, it seems unlikely that Iran will select the film as their nominee.

Neon still has a number of films in its release schedule for the remainder of the year. These include TogetherSplitsvilleNirvana the Band the Show the MovieKeeper, and Sentimental Value, another nominee for this year’s Palme d’Or. It Was Just An Accident will be available everywhere on October 15.
