“The universe is large, and it contains multitudes, but… it also contains me”, so says Tom Hiddleston’s Charles “Chuck” Krantz in the voiceover of the first teaser trailer of writer/director Mike Flanagan’s upcoming Stephen King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, which released on Thursday. The film adapts King’s novella of the same name, which was released in 2020.
The film follows Hiddleston’s mild-mannered Chuck, whose death coincides with the end of the world. In a story told in reverse, the film follows Chuck’s life from childhood to adulthood. The trailer demonstrates this by providing brief glimpses of the younger versions of Chuck, played by Jacob Tremblay and Benjamin Pajak. Other than a further look at Hiddleston’s Chuck, the trailer doesn’t show much plot or footage from the movie, though its editing style gives us a general feel for the film’s more somber tone. The tone and feel in this trailer showcase that The Life of Chuck will be far different from Flanagan’s other King adaptations, be it the psychological horror of Gerald’s Game or the supernatural horror of Doctor Sleep. The trailer also clues the audience into the more dramatic tone by highlighting King’s more dramatic work at the beginning, such as The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and Stand by Me.
As highlighted at the end of the trailer, the film has a stacked supporting cast. This cast includes Matthew Lillard, Karren Gillan, David Dastmalachian, Kate Siegal, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nick Offerman, and Mark Hamill. In addition to writing and directing the film, Mike Flanagan is producing alongside executive producer Elan Gale, who produced Flanagan’s Netflix series Midnight Mass.
The film is bound to be a crowd-pleaser, as it had an outstanding response when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, winning the much coveted Audience Award. The film will be released in US theaters by Neon in June.
