Neon struck gold this weekend, as the studio recently acquired the U.S. rights to Brandon Cronenberg’s sci-fi thriller Possessor according to Deadline. Making its global premiere at the previous Sundance Film Festival, Neon confirmed that they would announce a release date for the film further down the line, with Go USA tackling its home entertainment release.
Possessor features an impressive cast including Andrea Riseborough, Christopher Abbott, Tuppence Middleton, Sean Bean and Jennifer Jason Leigh. The film centers around a corporate agent named Tasya Vos (Riseborough), who serves under a private company that specializes in brain-implant technology. This technology takes on an assortment of roles within the human body and is utilized by the creators to assassinate targets for their respective clients. Following its premiere at Sundance, the film earned a 93% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Possessor marks Cronenberg’s second attempt as a director eight years after his critically-acclaimed debut feature Antiviral. Antiviral debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 and earned a plethora of awards that year, which included Best Canadian First Feature Film and Best New Director.
“Neon is a hugely exciting distributor, and I’ve been eager to work with them for a while now. I’m thrilled they are taking on Possessor in collaboration with Well Go USA, who made production of the film possible,” exclaimed Cronenberg in a statement about his collaboration with the company.
