During a recent live taping of the National Treasure Hunt podcast on Friday night in Philadelphia, Jon Turteltaub, director of the two National Treasure movies, said a third film is in the works. During the live taping, Turteltaub said the following:

“It’s happening. You’re the first people I’ve said this out loud to. I have not said anything before this, but you deserve to have the scoop. It’s finally real. Now, it’s ‘Hollywood real,’ meaning things could happen. Nic [Cage] gets hit by a bu;, there’s no National Treasure 3. If I get hit by a bus, there’s probably a National Treasure 3. Welcome to Hollywood.”

Turteltaub also stated, “We finally have a script that I like,” and that people at Disney told him, “OK, this sounds like a movie we can make.” Turteltaub’s comments also strongly imply that Nicholas Cage, who led the previous two National Treasure movies as historian Ben Gates, would return and reprise his role.

If this third National Treasure movie does happen, it would be the first film in the franchise since 2007’s National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Disney previously attempted to continue the franchise with the Disney+ series National Treasure: Edge of History, which starred Catherine Zeta-Jones, and featured Harvey Keitel and Justin Bartha reprising their roles from the films. However, that series was canceled in 2022 after only one season.

No further details are currently known about this third National Treasure movie.
