‘Napoleon Dynamite’ Producer Sean Covel to Make Directorial Debut with ‘Matt Epic’

Sean Covel, who produced the 2004 cult hit Napoleon Dynamite is slated to make his screenwriting and directorial debut with Matt Epic, according to Variety.

Covel describes the film, a road trip wedding comedy, as a combination of “My Best Friend’s Wedding, The Hangover, and Little Miss Sunshine.” And for the trivia books, Matt Epic will feature the same iconic van which was used in Napoleon Dynamite.

Covel plans to shoot the film in the small town of Edgemont, South Dakota, where he grew up. He stated “I’m going to have to bring in crew from L.A. I want to show the place where I grew up, show places that people have never seen.” The population of Edgemont is below 800 and declining.

Casting is now underway for the project, which will require 300 extras.

Covel has produced several films, including Think Tank and Beneath. His latest production, Carter and June, is a bank heist comedy scheduled for release next year. Covel has also written two children’s books which are soon to be published: Marlin McDoogle’s Magical Night and Porter the Hoarder.
