The movie theaters may be closed, but you won’t have to wait long to see My Spy. The distribution rights to this action-comedy starring Dave Bautista have been acquired by Amazon and will be streaming there instead of releasing in theaters. Originally planned for an August 2019 release, then March 13th, 2020, the film’s release was pushed back to April due to the coronavirus outbreak. Now, My Spy will be viewable from the comfort of your own home instead. An online release date has not yet been established.
Bautista plays JJ, an ex-soldier turned CIA operative who is keeping undercover surveillance on a family of an alleged arms dealer, only to be discovered by the suspect’s nine year-old niece, Sophie (Chloe Coleman). Sophie threatens to reveal JJ to her family unless he takes her under his wing and teaches her how to be a master spy. Now JJ must maintain his cover to take down a dangerous criminal while also looking out for his young new sidekick.
Most large event movies, such as the Disney live-action remake of Mulan and Marvel’s Black Widow, have maintained that they will be appearing in theaters (eventually), but studios seem to have taken up the practice releasing their smaller films digitally to keep up a profit. However, as the crisis continues, studios may be forced to release all movies online.
