Mutiny Pictures is set to release a new documentary Queen of the Capital which follows the life of Daniel Hays, D.C. bureaucrat by day and drag queen by night.
Hay’s story is incredibly unique, being a middle-aged man who works as a Department of Labor official with a double life; he’s also a drag queen known as Muffy Blake Stephyns. Hays’s alter ego is full of confidence and life as the documentary follows both Stephyns and Hays in their daily routines. We get a glimpse into Hays’ yearlong journey to become Empress of the Imperial Court of D.C. while also taking an inside look into the drag scene in Washington, D.C.
Queen of the Capital initially premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival, which primarily focuses on emerging artists and low-budget films. The documentary was directed by Josh Davidsburg and produced by Ben Yennie and Colleen Butler. Storywise, it blend Hay’s performances with compilations of work responsibilities, highlighting the duality to Hays’s life. The film also highlights the secret lives and persona which live in everyone.
Queen of the Capital will be available on-demand on June 20 before hitting theaters in a couple weeks later. Hopefully Stephyns’s story will warm your heart and inspire everyone to be their authentic self.
