Shakespeare and Grand Theft Auto fans are in for a thrilling experience. Mubi, the streaming service, production company, and film distributor has acquired both the U.S. and global streaming (SVOD) rights for the documentary Grand Theft Hamlet.
It will be co-directed by British filmmaker Pinny Grylls and British actor Sam Crane. The documentary will blend the dark themes of Hamlet with the immersive world of Grand Theft Auto. Set during the 2021 Covid lockdown, the story follows two out-of-work theater actors as they attempt to stage the iconic Hamlet within the virtual chaos of the video game.
Grand Theft Hamlet premiered at SXSW and won the Documentary Feature Jury Award. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s own critic Leslie Felperin, the documentary is “innovative, highly amusing, and often touching.” It most certainly is innovative with its use of in-game camera features and the historic elements of Shakespeare’s well-known story. This certainly seems to be a way to connect during a time of isolation.
Grand Theft Hamlet will make its U.K. debut at the BF London Film Festival on October 15. The special presentation at BFI IMAX will take place on October 20. Backed by BFI Doc Society, Park Pictures, Altitude, and Spark Features, Mubi plans to release the documentary in early 2025. Worldwide sales are being handled by Altitude Film Sales
This in all is part of Mubi’s broader strategy to grow its global platform while expanding its theatrical presence. Keep an eye out for its release next year!
