Earlier this week we reported on the possibility of Steven Seagal joining the cast of The Expendables 3 alongside returning stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Jet Li, and Dolph Lundgren, and newcomers Jackie Chan and Wesley Snipes. Well, it looks like the series’ run as a boy club is over, as Milla Jovovich, star of the Resident Evil series, is likely to join the cast.
The Jovovich addition actually makes quite a bit of sense. In addition to potentially infusing what is rapidly becoming a tired franchise (albeit an immensely profitable one) with energy and a new audience, Jovovich is exactly the sort of action headliner the series is famous for. There’s no news yet on what her role would be, but it’s pretty safe to assume she’s going to beat the tar out of some people.
More baffling is the news that Nicholas Cage is also in negotiations to join the movie, though according to Deadline this comes straight from Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer. Cage isn’t foreign to the odd action film (see Ghost Rider, Face/Off, Windtalkers), but one wonders if he doesn’t profile more as the film’s villain. It’s not hard to imagine Cage in full cheezeball force as a cocky antagonist whose schemes face off (pardon the pun) with the Expendable gang’s collective brawn.
At any rate, The Expendables 3 will start shooting later this year, with a likely 2014 release.
