Jared Leto’s introduction to the Marvel world as the unwilling Vampire Morbius has cashed in $39 million domestically and just over $84 million internationally. The Sony production was met with rather cold and disappointing reviews from both fans and critics.
Sony Entertainment is working hard to milk the few Marvel characters to which it still holds the exclusive rights. Morbius is only the first of a slate of films scheduled to release in the upcoming years by Sony. The film had been delayed for many months and as time passed by the anticipation grew among fans. Unfortunately, the final product did not meet expectations as the film has collected some of the worst ratings ever for any Marvel-related movie. Nonetheless, it did manage to bite off a modest $39 million at the domestic box office and a more than decent $84 million overseas, according to TheHollywoodReporter. Not too bad for a film that cost $75 million to shoot and had the difficult task of introducing a lesser-known character to wider audiences.
The Lost City has Sandra Bullock working alongside Channing Tatum together for the first time. The film delivers what it promises as the two actors venture to the deepest corner of the jungle to find an ancient lost city. It also cared to deliver a good chunk of income for Paramount after the movie managed to stay second place in the box office on its sophomore weekend with $14.8 million in the US.
Overseas though, it’s Sonic The Hedgehog 2 doing all the heavy lifting for Paramount Pictures. The blue speedster faces his worst foe yet, the red Hedgehog known as Knuckles. With Jim Carrey returning as the evil scientist Doctor Eggman the film grossed over $25.5 million internationally.
The Batman flew comfortably over the $700 million worldwide benchmark this weekend. A big, and necessary, win for Warner Bros. as this is their first significant money-making movie after a few embarrassing flops last year.
