When it comes to video game movie adaptation, one of the more financially successful ones has been the Resident Evil movie franchise from director Paul W.S. Anderson. While not the best received critically and have garnered mixed reception from fans due to how it deviates from the franchise, the films have been relatively successful from a box office perspective to the point that it’s not surprising that Paul W.S. Anderson is now attached to another popular video game franchise. Anderson is set to direct a film adaptation of the hit video game series Monster Hunter, which had just received it’s first trailer premiere today.
The trailer starts out with a team of soldiers lead by Captain Artemis (Milla Jovovich) were investigating mysterious creature attacks that have occurred. They then were suddenly caught up in a horrible sandstorm that transported them into this strange mysterious world filled with giant ferocious monsters. Now it’s up to Artemis and her team to escape this dangerous land while also getting help from some of the natives of that land to learn more about what this world has to offer.
The film seems to be in the same vein of the Resident Evil franchise as a big over the top action spectacle with a lot of CGI and Milla Jovovich doing a ton of stunts. While it could serve to be fun for action fans, Monster Hunter fans might be a bit disappointed with the more action sci-fi oriented theme as opposed the more fantasy epic that the main game series is known for. It is something that is also a fault with Anderson’s Resident Evil franchise taking a more action oriented approach despite the franchise being known for horror. However, given there are plenty of fans of the Resident Evil movies with them treating the movies separately as their own thing as a fun over the top action series as opposed to an adaptation of the games, Monster Hunter could have the same sort of appeal. Only time will tell but hopefully fans could at least get a fun action film despite not being a faithful representation of the game franchise.
Monster Hunter is set for release December 30th 2020.
