The following contains spoilers for Moana 2
It hasn’t been long since Moana 2 made its theater run, and its ending has hinted at a potential third film to the franchise. Originally created as a Disney+ series, Moana 2 was adapted into a full-length feature film after Disney executives saw early footage and thought it was worthy of a feature film.
The decision was, of course, the right one, grossing around $1.05 billion worldwide on a budget of $150 million. With the success of Moana 2, and the ending shifting toward an expanded universe, fans are already itching for a third installment of Moana.
Moana 2 ended with Moana becoming a demigod after sacrificing herself. In an interview with Comic Book Movie, directors David Derrick Jr. and Jason Hand revealed Moana’s new role as a demigod will act as the foundation for future films. Stating:
You know, there’s an untapped potential to the idea of her being a demigod, obviously. And we love that as an idea. And you know what that means. We haven’t quite got there yet, but I think it actually felt right for her character. As we were developing the story, we really wanted to show that Moana still had a lot to grow a lot to change.
And it really sort of puts an exclamation point on that idea when she has always been a person who’s out there for people doing things for the right reason, and it sort of naturally led to that idea that she would actually in the action she takes and everything she does that she proves herself to be more than just who she thought she was at the beginning. Having that demigod status at the end of the film, it says a lot about it, and it was something that we crafted towards and really wanted to do.
While there is no official announcement for a third Moana film, it is always possible Moana 3 will happen due to some stones already placed. If you’re looking for more Moana, Disney’s live action Moana starring Dwayne Johnson is expected to release in July of 2026.
