Mix-up At BAFTA Awards Resulted In Wrong Winner Being Announced

During the BAFTA Awards ceremony on Sunday, a mistake happened while announcing the Best Supporting Actress Winner: Carey Mulligan’s name was accidentally read; however, the actual winner was Kerry Condon.

The prize was presented by CODA actor Troy Kotsur, who won the award last year. The actor introduced the nominees with a sign language interpreter. When announcing the winner, the interpreter said Mulligan’s name out loud, which was quickly corrected to announce Kerry Condon as the winner. It is unclear if the actor or the interpreter made a mistake.

Condon was nominated for The Banshees of Inisherin. The feature tells the story of the sudden end of a friendship between Pádraic (Colin Farell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), two men who live on a fictional Irish Island. In the film, Condon plays Siobhán, Pádraic’s sister. Her character waits for the opportunity to leave the island and intercedes in the men’s conflict throughout the film.

During the awkward moment, her co-star Colin Farell encouraged her to take the stage because the actress’s name was displayed on the screen ride away. Also, the camera panned to Condon when the winner was announced. The actress accepted the award and said:

“Oh my God, thanks a million, really. This means so much to me”.

Later at the press conference, she described the experience as surreal:

“The whole thing was just like this black-out weird moment…All I remember is looking and seeing all the boys [from the film] looking at me, like ‘Get up!’ It was really surreal”

“When you get up there, let me tell you, you don’t know what’s going on”

Condon is an Irish actress who has starred before in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, This Must be the Place, and Better Call Saul.
