Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and Disney’s Lilo & Stitch are tracking to bring in big box office numbers this Memorial Day weekend. According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, both films are tracking to bring in record-breaking totals over the long weekend. The contrasting audiences of the two films are expected to draw in large audiences in what’s being described as a repeat of the Barbenheimer phenomenon of the Summer of 2023.
In its four-day debut, Lilo & Stitch is tracking an estimated domestic opening of $130 million, one of the largest domestic openings for a Disney live-action remake, according to data sourced from the National Research Group. The National Research Group also gives an opening range from a slightly smaller $120 million to an even more impressive $140 million.
Mission Impossible is also tracking for a smaller but equally impressive $80 million debut, which would be a franchise best. It would also compensate for the previous installment, Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning‘s disappointing $54.7 million debut. The Final Reckoning‘s debut would also put it above the franchise’s previous best opening, higher than Mission Impossible – Fallout’s $61.2 million three-day opening.
If this tracking comes true, both movies will deliver the biggest Memorial Day weekend in box office history, not adjusted for inflation. The previous record holder would be Memorial Day Weekend 2013, which collected $306 million at the total box office, with Fast and Furious 6 opening to $117 million and The Hangover Part III opening to $50 million.
Time will tell whether those predictions are correct when Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning and Lilo & Stitch open on May 23rd.
