The Minions are back and trying their hand at both movie-making and monster hunting. During the 60th Super Bowl Seahawks vs Patriots broadcast, Illumination and Universal Pictures released the official trailer for the next chapter in the Despicable Me franchise, Minions & Monsters.
The trailer was introduced by a short clip of a minion running up to the camera, out of breath, trying to say what sounds like the word “Monster,” before passing out from exhaustion. The trailer itself is the first look audiences are getting at the Despicable Me spinoff, and it looks like the minions are doing whatever it takes to get their monster movie made, even if that means enlisting the help of otherworldly creatures. The synopsis under YouTube’s version of the trailer reads as follows:
This is the rambunctious, ridiculous, and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world, and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.
The feature is directed by Pierre Coffin, who directed the first three Despicable Me films as well as the first Minions film, from a script he wrote with Brian Lynch. Coffin also has voiced the Minions since their introduction back in 2010’s Despicable Me. Lynch executive produced, while Bill Ryan and Illumination’s founder and CEO Chris Meledandri produced the animated spinoff.
Minions & Monsters is set to release in theaters on July 1st.
