Minecraft has landed another $80.6 million for its staggeringly impressive performance with $281 million earned in total for North America and an additional $296.6 million overseas for worldwide total of $550.6 million with many now predicting a steady climb to even higher numbers and a possible 1 billion end for the film’s theatrical run. Adding to Minecraft’s accomplishments for this week is its complete dominance as a holder lording over many new films released in the April 11-13 frame in anticipation of Easter, which will be on April 21 this year, later in the month.
Among those defeated by Minecraft was the first animated feature from Angel Studios’ King of Kings, which brought in $19 million, beating the previous record of Dreamwork’s Prince Of Egypt $14.5 million for an animated biblical story. A record that stood since 1998. King of Kings was bolstered by a star-studded cast and will likely see a boost come Easter, along with its unintentional competition of The Chosen landing in 2nd.
Places 3rd through 5th were all taken by newcomers, with 3rd going to The Amateur with a solid $15 million opening. 4th to Warfare, which netted $8.3 million and a very positive reception from critics and audiences.
5th went to Drop, which earned $7.5 million, with 6th going to the third part of The Chosen as this week’s last box office newcomer.
A Working Man racked up another $3.06 million for its third week, beating Disney’s Snow-white once again, which landed in 8th with a measly $2.8 million, further cementing that there will be no comeback for the film. Snow-white barely beats Woman in the Yard from Blumhouse, which earned $2.1 million for its fourth week. 10th went to The Chosen Part 2, which for the weekend earned just shy of a million at $931,6K.
