Mindy Kaling’s ‘Late Night’ Debuts its First Trailer

Late Night was the darling of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. After its initial screenings, Amazon Studios aggressively pursued the Nisha Ganatra directed comedy and purchased the film for record breaking $13 million. After a period of silence, the first trailer for the spunky flick has finally dropped.

The trailer features a struggling late night talk show host (Emma Thompson) shake up the writing room in an attempt to reinvent her show. In her desperation to keep her job, Thompson highers an aspiring writer, Molly Patel (Mindy Kaling), to bring a new voice to the program. The trailer instantly exhibits the film’s sharp wit and topical humor. The debut preview also displays the outstanding chemistry between the film’s strong female leads. Sharp viewers will also catch scenes of the film’s more substantively complex moments. The preview touches upon themes of workplace diversity, cultural gaps between generations, and the complications of powerful women working in a traditionally patriarchal industry.

Along with starring in Late Night, Kaling is also credited as the comedy’s scribe. Late Night’s acclaim cements Kaling as a major cinematic force. The film serves as a landmark for Kaling’s transition from television star to powerhouse on the big screen. Late Night will make its theatrical debut via Amazon Studios on June 7.
