Mike Flanagan Teases Rebecca Ferguson’s Possible Casting For His Upcoming ‘Exorcist’ Reboot

Rebecca Ferguson in Mike Flanagan's 'Doctor Sleep'

At recent appearance at Motor City Comic Con, Mike Flanagan teased the possibility of Rebecca Ferguson being cast in his upcoming Exorcist reboot for Universal Pictures and Blumhouse.  When asked about the reboot by a fan, Flanagan mentioned Ferguson by name, saying he had discussed the project with her when it was announced. He first joked that Ferguson has been “busy with little indie project called Dune, and she’s on Season 3 of Silo right now. She still finds the time to do, like, one of the biggest movies on Netflix right now”, referring to her role in Kathryn Bigelow’s A House of Dynamite, which has remained at the top of Netflix’s charts since its release in late October.

Flanagan then went on to talk in further detail about his discussions with Ferguson on the project, saying:

She’s prolific, but we’re in constant contact. Once, every couple of months, I hear from Rebecca just saying, ‘Hey, what’s going on?’ And I’ll say, ‘Hey! Would you like to come do this part? I’d love to talk to you about this thing. She’s always booked, but one of these days, it’ll work out for sure. I can’t give away the name of the character, but when I first got The Exorcist, she was one of my first phone calls.

Flanagan was first announced to be working on a reboot of The Exorcist in May of last year, taking over the franchise from David Gordon Green after the critical and financial failure of his Exorcist film, The Exorcist: Believer, which was released in October 2023. If Ferguson does get cast in Flanagan’s Exorcist reboot, it would reunite the actress with the filmmaker after previously working with him on Doctor Sleep, Flanagan’s sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. In addition to this Exorcist reboot, Flanagan’s other upcoming projects include a miniseries based on Stephen King’s Carrie and a television adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower book series, which is currently in very early development.
