In the mix of Andy Serkis being announced to direct the upcoming sequel to 2018’s Venom, it was also announced that Academy Award nominated actress Michelle Williams will be reprising her role as Eddie Brock’s girlfriend Anne Weying. She will be returning alongside Tom Hardy as Brock and Woody Harrelson, who appeared in the film’s post credits scene as Cletus Kasady (aka Carnage), setting him up as the sequel’s main antagonist.
Williams expressed both her excitement to appear alongside Hardy and with Andy Serkis, discussing how much she admired the latter’s work. She described Serkis as “Gifted in such a specific way, and I’m very excited to learn from him and be around him.” With a director like Serkis on board, many are curious to see what he’ll bring to the table given his previous experience on special effect-heavy projects. This, of course, includes directing 2018’s Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle for Netflix and doing motion capture performances for Gollum in the Lord of the Rings franchise and Caesar from the new Planet of the Apes films.
With Serkis on board and Williams returning, many are hopeful that this new Venom will improve upon the first film’s polarizing, yet memorable elements. Not to mention we could even get another female Venom moment much like in the first film. Only time will tell on whether or not fans will receive even more mayhem and carnage in the next big film featuring Spider-Man’s greatest adversary.
Venom 2 is set for release on October 2nd 2019.
