Michael Showalter to Helm Jessica Chastain-Octavia Spencer Holiday Comedy

According to Variety, director Michael Showalter’s next project will be an as-yet-untitled holiday comedy starring Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game) and Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water). The movie re-teams the two actresses; they starred together in 2011’s The Help and both received a Best Supporting Actress nod for the film (Spencer took home the award).

Showalter directed last year’s surprising hit comedy The Big Sick, which was Oscar-nominated for Best Original Screenplay. Previous to The Big Sick, Showalter co-wrote and directed 2015’s romantic comedy Hello, My Name is Doris starring Sally Field.

Universal acquired the rights to the film, beating out Fox and Paramount. The story centers on two women trying to make it home for Christmas despite multiple obstacles. Chastain co-wrote the story with Kelly Carmichael. Peter Chiarelli (Crazy Rich Asians) will work on the screenplay. Chastain will produce through Freckle Films, along with Maven Pictures, Carmichael, Celine Rattray, and Trudie Styler.
