2013 saw Superman himself return to the big screen in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. In the film, Superman faces down one of his oldest arch-rivals, General Zod, portrayed by Michael Shannon. And with The Flash speeding into cinemas this weekend, the multiverse story has a range of DC characters returning to film, including Shannon’s Zod.
While fans may be excited to see Shannon return to the role, Shannon himself got brutally honest about his place in the story. “I’m not gonna lie, it wasn’t quite satisfying for me, as an actor. These multiverse movies are like somebody playing with action figures. It’s like, ‘Here’s this person. Here’s that person. And they’re fighting!'”
Over the last few years, there has been a steady influx of films surrounding multiverse concepts, and the upcoming Flash movie is no different. On top of expressing a distaste for multiverse movies, Shannon added that he doesn’t feel like his role is crucial in the film, and elaborated on how he felt a difference in Zod between Man of Steel and The Flash. “I really felt like Man of Steel was actually a pretty sophisticated story. I feel like The Flash is too, but it’s not Zod’s story. I’m basically there to present a challenge.”
However, although the use of Zod doesn’t sit the best with Shannon, he complemented the prowess of the films leading star, Ezra Miller. “I can’t wait to see this performance. It’s a huge challenge. I don’t wanna give anything away, but what Ezra has to do in this movie is pretty crazy, and I think [they’re] up for the task.”
The Flash hits theaters June 16th, and will star Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, and Sasha Calle.
