Academy Award nominee Michael Keaton is set to direct and star alongside Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman in Rode to Ruin, an original Western thriller.
Written by R. Dean McCreary, the story centers on retired U.S. Marshal Henry Tillman (Keaton), who has spent 40 years tracking down the man responsible for his wife’s murder. The long-dormant investigation reignites when the trail leads him directly to Joseph Mulberry (Freeman), an aging, wanted outlaw suffering from memory loss. As Tillman closes in, the confrontation uncovers a long-buried secret that threatens the survival of both men.
The production marks the first time Keaton and Freeman have shared the screen in nearly 38 years, following their collaboration in Glenn Gordon Caron’s 1988 addiction drama Clean and Sober.
Rode to Ruin serves as Keaton’s third feature-length directorial effort, following his 2008 crime drama The Merry Gentleman and the 2023 noir thriller Knox Goes Away. Freeman’s previous experience within the Western genre includes Clint Eastwood’s 1992 Oscar-winning film Unforgiven. The actor currently co-stars in Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ spy thriller series Lioness.
The feature will be produced by Lori McCreary, Keaton, Kelly Mendelsohn, and Gary Lucchesi as a joint production between Revelations Entertainment and George & Leona Productions.
A formal production schedule, supporting cast, and release window for Rode to Ruin have not yet been announced.
