Actor Michael B. Jordan and writer Alana Mayo are tinkering on a HBO Max comedy film titled Fashionably Black under the duo’s Outlier Society production banner, according to Deadline. The film will feature writing contributions by Christa Gatewood and Robin Thede of A Black Lady Sketch Show, who will also act as an executive producer alongside fellow Outlier Society executive producer Khaliah Neal.
Set in a universe filled with haute couture, Fashionably Black examines a scenario where a black woman is placed in the epicenter of the fashion industry. It follows a young black woman named Zoe Bankole who becomes the industry’s first and only woman of color to reach the creative director title for a French haute couture company and must face the adversity of deadlines and fierce rivalries among co-workers.
Outlier Society recently inked two first-look deals with Warner Bros Studios and Amazon Studios apiece for a film and a television series. Outside of Fashionably Black, the two studios acquired the first installment of the fantasy trilogy called Kingdom of Souls, a Tom Clancy project entitled Without Remorse, an untitled monster film by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island), a thriller named Methusaleh, a fantasy project called Black Leopard, Red Wolf, and a WWII film called The Liberators.
