Mia Hansen-Løve Lines Up Mia Wasikowska, Greta Gerwig for ‘Bergman Island’

News out of Cannes has French filmmaker Mia Hansen-Løve teaming up with prominent indie actresses Mia Wasikowska and Greta Gerwig for her English language debut, Bergman Island. Screen Rant originally reported the story, which also sees John Turturro (Transformers) starring.

The story will follow a filmmaking couple as they retreat to the Swedish island of Faro to work on their respective screenplays in the setting that had once inspired acclaimed auteur Ingmar Bergman. The two get lost in the wild atmosphere of the island, blurring lines of reality and fiction as the summer and their screenplays unfold.

It is currently unknown which role each actor will play; however, the film will begin shooting in the summer of 2018, which is also the centennial year of Bergman’s birth in 1918. Hansen-Løve’s longtime producer Charles Gillibert just launched the project at Cannes and will be shopping the film to distributors.

Hansen-Løve has already wrangled an all-star indie cast for her English debut, and will likely get a lot of heads turning. Wasikowska is next starring in The Man with the Iron Heart alongside Rosamund Pike. Gerwig recently wrapped filming on her directorial debut Lady Bird, and will have voice role in Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs.
