Mark Zuckerberg the CEO of Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram has announced that ‘Movie Gen’ an AI video tool will be added to their services on Instagram around next year.
This announcement has met with mixed reactions from audiences with many questioning Zuckerberg on how the company acquired the data to train the ‘Movie Gen’ engines and what this means for the film industry moving forward.
Zuckerberg and Meta shared that “We’ve trained these models on a combination of licensed and publicly available data sets.” regarding the material that was used to train the AI. It should be noted that many users of Facebook and Instagram across the globe voiced complaints about being unable to opt out of data collecting when this plan was announced back in 2020 that Meta planned to use posts on their sites and apps to train the engines. Meta has not announced whether it has made deal with a studio company like Runway has with Lionsgate.
As of October 2024, Meta reported that ‘Movie Gen’ was capable of generating footage of about 16 seconds in length at 16 frames per second of realistic images. Samples of this were shared on the Meta.com showing how single images could be animated with Moive Gen and word prompts could be used to create genetic footage.
More concerns were brought forward to Meta about the potential impact on filmmakers’ jobs with Movie Gen. The company shared this statement regarding the intended use of if AI tool, “While there are many exciting use cases for these foundation models, it’s important to note that generative AI isn’t a replacement for the work of artists and animators.” Stressing further that AI is intended as a tool to assist not replace.
